How to use Windows Live Writer to publish to Drupal

Well, whenever I think of a problem, I always check if anyone else encountered it before. And Google is your friend here. Drupal doesn't appear as one of the supported interfaces under Writer wizard. But it actually works. This (and the last blog entry) was created using the Windows Live Writer and posted directly to this Drupal web site. A quick Google search revealed that it is quite easy to do this. Just click on this link and follow the directions. That post however seems a little old and while trying the new WLW 12.0.1277.816 I find that you can select Wordpress, WordPress 2.2+, MovableType API or even Metaweblog API. Here are the simple instructions:

  1. In the account wizard, type your blog URL, usually of the form:
    http://{hostname}/blog/{userid}
    , where userid is a number.
  2. Enter your user name and password.
  3. Select either of the four APIs suggested above. I find that MovableType API works best.
  4. For the remote posting URL enter
    http://{hostname}/xmlrpc.php
  5. Complete the rest of the wizard. Say 'Yes' when it asks to create a temporary post. Don't worry the post will be deleted immediately.

That's all. It was very simple to setup WLW to post to my Drupal site.
